INTAN JAYA - In the remote highlands of Papua, a different kind of mission unfolded as Task Force Yonif 500/Sikatan held a heartfelt free medical service (Yankes) at Mamba Village’s local kindergarten. Led by Task Force Doctor Lt. Ckm. Dr. Indra Sitepu, the team of ten personnel provided much-needed healthcare support to residents often left without access to basic medical treatment. With genuine empathy and professionalism, the team treated villagers for a range of common yet often neglected conditions including infected wounds, muscular fatigue, back pain, and respiratory illnesses like coughs and colds.

“Many of the people we treated had wounds that were at risk of serious infection or suffered from physical ailments due to hard labor, ” said Dr. Indra Sitepu. “Despite the challenges of this remote area, the operation went smoothly and was warmly welcomed by the community.”

A Portrait of Compassion in Uniform

Among the many touching moments was the image of a young child calmly sitting on a blue chair, nibbling a biscuit given by a soldier, while being gently examined. This tender interaction served as a powerful reminder that TNI’s presence in Papua is not just military it is human, compassionate, and familial.

“We are here not only with arms, but with hearts, ” said Sergeant Daniel, one of the medics. “We want the people to see that TNI is not separate from them we are family.”

TNI's Humanitarian Mission in Action

This Yankes program is part of the broader humanitarian efforts embedded within the RI–PNG Border Security Operation conducted by Yonif 500/Sikatan. It reflects the ethos that defending the nation includes caring for its people, especially in remote regions like Intan Jaya.

The success of this initiative further solidifies the TNI’s role as both protector and caregiver, building trust with the local population and reaffirming national unity through service and empathy.

Commander of the Habema Task Force, Lt. Col. Iwan Dwi Prihartono, emphasized: “What our troops did in Mamba Village is a shining example of our mission that TNI must always be present for the people. Not just with might, but with compassion.”

Closing Reflection

In Papua’s rugged terrain, where state presence is often minimal, these simple yet sincere acts of service remind the nation that hope can arrive in camouflage not just with commands, but with care. The TNI continues to embody a force that protects, connects, and heals one village at a time.
